A mate of mine took a navigation exam which involved a radio procedure element. HE cringes when ever the phrase "over and out" is used. Get them to read this. You might also want to print out the Phonetic Alphabet as a sneaky way to get them spelling things out. The ten codes might not be so appropriate for them due to the subject matter. e.g 10-71 & lots of ways to mention a dead body.
I doubt that they'd have the patience to learn any of the ten codes - there's far too many of them!
I bet your mate hated "Roger That" too - which always amuses me on American Police/Forensics shows :)
I use the phonetic alphabet a lot at work. I sometimes cringe when somebody says "M for Mother" or "Z for Zebra" instead of "Mike" or "Zulu". You get some even better variants from people who don't know it at all, but have a go at their own version to get their message understood.
I remember when I first had to learn ten-code while working for a theme park. I always dreaded hearing 10-10 as two different departments used it to mean either fight in progress or a kid being ill. I still find myself saying 10-4 instead of OK then see the blank looks on peoples faces.

How old are the people using Mother & Zebra. Maybe they just watched a lot of War films on childhood Sunday afternoons.
