Happy New Year 2012
New Years Eve - went to the Cinema to see the latest Sherlock Holmes escapade - pretty good. Had a quick pint beforehand in Flanagan's Apple (Irish theme bar on Mathew Street - loads of junk nailed to the ceiling). Afterwards we walked out of town to the Blackburne Arms on Catherine Street, where we enjoyed live music and beer until the New Year arrived. Taxi home for snacks, whisky, end of the Hootenanny and now the Blues Brothers on TV. Happy New Year everyone!

Happy New Year 2011!
Happy New Year Everybody!
We've been out this New Year, for a change! First we went to see Tron: Legacy, and for a treat we saw it at the IMAX in 3D, sitting in the Premier seats.
To be honest the film wasn't that brilliant - too much hype about how good it is possibly?, but not bad, particular with the extra sensory enhancements.
Afterwards we wandered up the hill to Catherine Street, and spent the rest of the night in the Blackburne Arms. There was some excellent live music and singing from an acoustic guitarist (although he did favour the "extended mix" for almost every song).
3 people wandered in wearing '70's fancy dress, claiming that they always dressed that way. Told them that they couldn't top the Willy Wonka with 11 Oompah Loompah's who I saw out and about on Xmas eve. Beer was good (Black Sheep), as was the atmosphere so we stayed for "the bongs" at midnight. - Spotted one of the teachers from the boys school in there too.
Caught a taxi home, and saw the end of this years "Hootenanny" with Jools Holland and guests (OMG! look at Alison Moyet - she's a shadow of her former self).

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade!
Ended up doing a 13.5 hour overnight shift at work yesterday - with the result that I got the day off work today - which once I'd caught up on lost sleep makes a relaxing New Year's Eve. I've booked the first week of January off work - so I get a break after the mayhem of the festive season.
2010 arrived, as most years do. The neighbours were doing "Auld Lang Syne" in the street, but far too cold to stay out there, so as ever we're in watching Jools Holland's Hootenanny.
There's usually something on this music wise that attracts my attention, and requires further investigation. Past years have introduced me to the likes of The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, and Seasick Steve.
This year it's a latin acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela playing Buster Voodoo. They've miked up their instruments, and piped them through a few effects pedals - predominantly a Wah Wah, resulting in something that sounds like a Mexican version of one of the Starsky and Hutch themes. Something new for my souped up i-pod.
I've also just seen Dizzy Rascal rapping to "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and Florence and the Machine covering Nina Simone's "My Baby Don't Care".
Kasabian are on again now, with a bunch of "violin babes" backing them - blokes aren't allowed to play bowed instruments unless they're in an orchestra or a folk group :)
Oh no, they've all got together to form an all star "supergroup", singing "Down by the Riverside" for the finale - these things just never work!

Happy New Year
Whoosh! What was that?"
"2008 mate".
"Do I get another one?"
"'Fraid not".
Happy New Year everybody! All the best for 2009.

New Years Eve - Snow
It's been a foggy New Years Eve today.
Got back a little early from work to find that it's been snowing all day, but only in a square mile or so around our house.
Samwise said that he'd wished for Snow at Christmas, so I guess that he's got his Christmas Wish. Slightly late, but close enough, and just for him, as the rest of the city appears to be frozen, but doesn't have snow!

Happy New Year!
Welcome to 2008 everybody!
Capital of Culture - here we go!
Watched Jools Holland's Hootenanny on the box. Went out to watch the fireworks as Big Ben bonged the midnight hour. Got asked in to a spontaneous party that was going on at one of the neighbours houses. Nipped back for Novelist Supermum and we both went round for an hour or so.
Got back in time to see the last couple of songs on the Hootenanny. Good to see that Seasick Steve was on again - who I remember enjoying this time last year
A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all!

It's 2007!
Just poured myself a Bourbon Whiskey and Coke, (Novelist Supermum had another glass of wine), shouted Happy New Year!, snogged Novelist Supermum, kissed the sleeping Hobbits, then went outside with drink to watch the impromptu firework display (there's a house at the top of the street that puts on a spectacular 10 minute show every New Year).
Met some of the neighbours, who like me were in the street, glass in hand doing the same. Shook hands with the bloke from number 5, kissed his wife (at least I think that it was that way round) then chatted whilst watching the fireworks. Found out some new info i.e. their names - they've only been living there for 10 months or so, and I've met them at 2 parties. Should remember this time (hopefully).
Got back in to find Marc Almond singing on the telly - Aarrgh! Somebody I've never grown to like - even though he's singing a good song ("The Games People Play") with Jools Holland.
Roland Rivron (my hero - some people say that we are similar in look) didn't manage to predict anything for 2007, but has promised to do more for "Global Worming" (not a typo).
Speaking of predictions, where are the 80mph winds? Probably just as well that they haven't materialised.
Ade Edmondson has just trumpet played and sung his way through an easy listening, big band version of The Sex Pistol's "Anarchy in the UK". This went down a storm.
Also I thought that Seasick Steve was superb - this guy played a 3 string electric guitar and provided a rhythm section by stomping on a wooden crate - the song was "Dog House Blues" (reminiscent of John Lee Hooker's "House Rent Blues").

Hootenanny (Happy New Year)
Well it's that time of year again.
Spent a couple of hours trying to get Frodo and Samwise to settle down and go to sleep (they're still thinking that because there's a Christmas tree downstairs somebody might leave some more presents for them under it).
Sitting around with a few drinks waiting for Jools Holland to start the "Hootenanny".
Where did 2006 go eh?
80mph winds predicted tonight, so the fireworks might not be so good tonight - they've already cancelled the ones in town.
Having said that, I can hear a few early starters going off already.
Happy New Year everybody! - hope 2007 goes well for you all.
